The ATM just doesn't let you and you get told why.

Thanks! I presumed that would be the case, but was just curious.

I've withdrawn £300 on a Nationwide card at 23:58, then just waited until 00:02 and withdrawn another £300 from the same machine, wondering if it would actually let me do that (it did) but I've never tried to go over the limit within the day.

Just to satisfy my curiosity.

On you statement do the dates tally up.

And, as I discovered on a recent trip to Australia, even though the local maximum amount is higher than the amount I can withdraw in the UK, the bank machine would still only allow me to withdraw £300. (Tried to withdraw AUD1000, which is the 'normal' maximum in Oz, it would only let me have whatever £300 was in AUD).

I won't be trying it, but I presume you'd get a failed transaction fee on top of the ATM refusing to give you the cash.

You won't on a free withdrawals ATM, and I very much doubt if you would on one that charges for withdrawals.

Just looked my statement, and it was actually two lots of £250 I withdrew, not £300, but the timings were as I stated earlier.

On the statement, both transactions were dated 09 Feb 2017, but the first one said "Withdrawal 08 February 2017" in the Description column, while the second one just said "ATM Withdrawal LINK"

Your bank will set your ATM limit to either £300 up to £500.

This runs from 0:00 - 0:00 so you can take £300 out of your account at 11:59 and another £300 at 00:01, because its then counted as a new day.

If your limit is £300, you may be able to ask your bank to increase this to maximum amount of £500.

Most bank accounts with Halifax were changed late 2015 from £300 to £500 automatically so you may have £500 already if you bank with Halifax. Savings accounts are still limited to £300.
