Money left in cash machine shortcrust

I left 20 quid sticking out of a cash machine on Saturday. I withdrew from a BoS account and that cash machine was in a big sainsburys (not sure who the machine belongs to...). If it was sucked back in will it be automatically credited to my account, and if so how long does it take?

I suspect someone bought themselves £20 worth of "free" shopping with it. Not necessarily in Sainsbury's either.

i.e. the next person to use that machine helped themselves (stole it).

Machines in Sainsburys are run by HBOS branded as Sainsburys Bank I believe.

My understanding is that if the notes(s) are left in the dispenser they are sucked back in after a short while - not sure how long but I'd guess about a minute. The machine then has an unbalanced account. You can claim the money back from your bank if you specify the machine, the amount and the date. If the machine belongs to a different bank the process takes a little longer.

Thanks all. It was very quiet so I think there's a good chance it got sucked back in. I spoke to BoS who have opened a claim. Will let you know!

Lucky you. If it had been a bit busier, I doubt you'd have seen it again.

Bearing the amount involved they may have decided to just refund rather than waste time on an investigation.
